A game above the city

In dense cities, space is under pressure. Especially space where people can move, play, and connect. Football fields are scarce, waiting lists grow, and urban land is increasingly claimed by housing and infrastructure.

But what if the solution isn’t on the ground? What if the next generation of sports fields rises above it?

In Glendale, that future is already taking shape.

Atop a parking structure at the iconic Americana at Brand, a 25,000-square-foot rooftop has been transformed into Skyline Pitch: an open-air football destination where the city becomes the backdrop of the game. As the sun sets over the San Gabriel Mountains, players pass the ball across vibrant turf fields, surrounded by skyline views and urban energy.

What was once a sea of concrete is now a place of movement, community and experience.

A roof that proves: the future of urban sport isn’t next to us — it’s above us.

From parking to playground

Skyline Pitch reimagines a familiar urban typology: the parking garage. Traditionally designed for cars, these structures occupy vast amounts of space in cities worldwide. Yet, as mobility patterns shift and car usage evolves, their rooftops are increasingly underutilised.

Instead of leaving this valuable layer dormant, Skyline Pitch activates it. Two football fields, a panna cage, a fut tennis court and multiple interactive play zones create over 15 ways to engage with the sport. Around it, lounge areas, food concepts and social spaces turn the venue into more than just a place to play — it becomes a destination.

This layered approach transforms a single-use structure into a multifunctional urban hub.

A new model for urban development

What makes this concept particularly relevant is its connection to a broader shift in city-making. Retail environments are evolving. Shopping centres are no longer just places of consumption, but spaces of experience.

By integrating sport and social interaction on the roof, Skyline Pitch adds a new dimension to the value of real estate. Visitors don’t just come to shop — they come to play, stay longer, and connect.

This creates a powerful synergy:

  • Increased footfall and longer visits
  • New revenue models through sports and events
  • Stronger community engagement
  • A more vibrant and resilient urban environment

It is not just a sports facility. It is a strategic urban intervention.

Solving a real urban challenge

In cities like Los Angeles, one of the biggest barriers to sports participation is simple: a lack of space. Fields are limited, access is uneven, and growing populations increase the pressure.

Skyline Pitch addresses this challenge directly by unlocking space that already exists.

No new land acquisition. No competition with housing. No compromise on accessibility.

Just a smarter use of what is already there.

It is a clear and scalable solution for cities worldwide facing similar constraints.

“A football pitch on a parking roof proves one thing: even in the most crowded cities, space isn’t the problem — imagination is.”

Why it matters

Healthy cities require more than parks at ground level. They demand a three-dimensional approach to space.

Rooftops are the missing layer.

Skyline Pitch shows how this layer can be activated:

  • By transforming mono-functional infrastructure into social spaces
  • By combining sport, leisure and commerce
  • By creating accessible places for movement in dense urban areas
  • By turning overlooked surfaces into high-impact environments

Not leftover space, but opportunity space

What happens in Glendale is part of a global movement. From rooftops in Chicago to urban interventions across Europe and Asia, cities are beginning to recognise the untapped potential above them.

Roofs are no longer residual spaces for technical installations. They are opportunity spaces.

Spaces where cities can grow — without expanding outward.

What if we dare to do this in Europe? The challenges in European cities are just as urgent. Limited space, increasing urban density, and a growing need for healthy, active environments.

At the same time, thousands of square metres of flat rooftops remain unused:

  • Parking garages
  • Shopping centres
  • Office buildings
  • Schools and sports halls

Imagine:

  • Football pitches on top of mobility hubs
  • Multi-sport rooftops on retail centres
  • Schoolyards elevated above the city
  • Roofs that generate not only energy, but also movement and connection

With vision, collaboration and bold design, these spaces can be transformed.

Skyline Pitch is more than a striking example. It is a statement.

A statement that even in the most space-constrained cities, there is always room to move.

We just have to look up.
