What is the secret behind Rotterdam? That was the question we set out to explore and this eMagazine is our way of sharing what we uncovered.
Armed with curiosity and an open mind, our group embarked on a discovery tour through the city. We cycled along the Maas, rode metros through evolving neighborhoods and wandered through parks, playgrounds and public squares. From iconic sports venues to hidden community corners, we weren’t just visiting; we were unraveling Rotterdam. Through the lens of the ESWAM, we observed how sport, space, wellbeing, accessibility and mobility are not treated as separate topics, but as interconnected threads in the fabric of city life.
Rotterdam didn’t present itself with loud slogans or flashy showpieces. Instead, it revealed itself in smart solutions, inclusive spaces and honest conversations. We saw how skateparks are seamlessly integrated into the public realm, how facilities are build to maximize space and suggesting how thoughtful pricing models can make sport more accessible to youth. From the energy of top-level events to the quiet impact of grassroots initiatives, everything had intention.
We’re deeply grateful to our local guides, Marijn Eggen and Marjolein Buijs, who welcomed us with open arms and gave us access not just to the city’s infrastructure, but to its thinking. Their insights, along with their colleagues, helped us understand how Rotterdam organizes itself, how collaboration across sectors is embedded into planning and how data, design and social inclusion go hand in hand.
Throughout our journey, we saw how Rotterdam stays ambitious while staying grounded. How it builds 50.000 new homes without forgetting the need for green space. How it hosts international events while still making room for everyday play. How it continues to evolve, yet remains connected to its people.
This eMagazine captures just a slice of that experience. It reflects not only what we saw. It inspired, energized and stimulated curiousity. From discussions about free public sports facilities to ideas for future collaborations, we returned home with new questions, fresh ideas and a desire to keep the momentum going.
Our next stop is Tallinn, but Rotterdam has set the bar high. It reminded us that a city is not just built of buildings and roads, but of possibility. And when sports and wellbeing are seen as one, that possibility becomes something truly powerful.
So here it is: "Rotterdam. Metropolis of Sports.", an ESWAM visit to Rotterdam. A snapshot of a city that welcomed us, surprised us and challenged us to think differently. For now, grab a coffee (or tea or water), get comfy and enjoy the read!
