Welcome to ESWAM eMagazine #1.1, our very first special edition, where we shine a spotlight on one of the core themes in fostering cross-border collaboration with European cities: Public Space. The idea for this edition was born out of the inspiring conversations during our webinar on February 6th, where European government representatives came together to discuss how materials can quite literally create magic in our shared spaces. If you missed it, all presentations are available as a download in our mediacenter. In this eMagazine, we bring you a unique cross-European perspective: six innovative companies from different countries were asked to answer the exact same set of questions. This allows you, as reader, to easily compare their visions, solutions and approaches for activating public space with smart, sustainable and inclusive materials. From flexible designs to circular concepts, this edition is full of food for thought. We also travel beyond this comparison. With inspiring contributions from Sweden and Estonia, we add fresh local insights into how public space can support wellbeing and participation. These voices enrich the ongoing ESWAM mission: to foster meaningful cross-border collaboration by exchanging knowledge, funding opportunities within a forward-thinking network. This special edition is part of a broader ESWAM journey that started back in September 2022, when Aalborg, Antwerp, Copenhagen and Rotterdam met in Denmark. Since then, we’ve been working to deepen the exchange between cities and organizations, using sports and wellbeing as the bridge.
Each ESWAM special zooms in on one of our four themes: cross-sectoral, facilities, participation and this time: public space. What happens when we rethink our parks, playgrounds and urban corners? What role do materials play in activating those spaces for movement and community? The answers in this edition will surprise and inspire you. For now, a huge thank you goes out to our contributors: Alo, Andreas, Arne, Frank, Janek, Leon, Quentin, and last but not least the local tabletennis table, who all offered their time, energy and unique perspectives. They help us see how materials aren’t just static; they’re tools to invite people in, spark activity and build community. We hope this eMagazine becomes a practical and inspiring tool for anyone working in or around public space. The next regular ESWAM eMagazine will arrive in June 2025, but until then, we remain on the lookout for innovative ideas from across Europe. If something in these pages resonates with you, let’s connect! For now, grab a coffee or tea, get comfy and enjoy the read.
